Bedroom Laminate Floors
Having a laminate floor in your bedroom has several advantages. As the floor is generally more hygienic than carpet, it is safer for children to play on and is also seen as more pet friendly. With regards to kids, another important benefit of having laminate is the ease of cleaning. Red wine, coke and cordial can be quickly cleaned up with no long term damage unlike carpets which can be virtually ruined with one spill. The bedroom is however usually above other rooms so will need to be properly installed with sound reducing underlay.
- Easy to clean
- Hygienic
- Pet friendly
- Can be fit with underfloor heating
- Easy to maintain
- Affordable
- Makes a room feel lighter
- Makes the room look more spacious
- Improves the appearance for lettings/sale
Choosing the right underlay for upstairs floors
As laminate flooring can carry sound it's important for the people next door, downstairs and around the rooms that you fit the laminate floor correctly using the right type of underlay. If you are in a semi detached house or block of flats, you must, must, must underlay your floor correctly, noise can travel to the next house or block of flats so it's very crucial to make the effort underneath your floor so you won't cause any friction or clashes with your neighbours (see below). The standard underlays from DIY stores may not be sufficient in some cases so we've compiled a table of all noise reducing underlay and estimated their prices (as of 1/2/12) for a 10m2 property.
| Manufacturer | Product | Noise Reduction | Sold in | Rough Cost 10 m2 |
| Wickes | High Performance | > 20db | Pack: 10.2m2 | £25 |
| Wickes | Fibreboard | > 19db | Pack: 10.03m2 | £24.10 |
| UK Flooring Direct | Cushion Acoustic Gold | > 22db | Pack: 15m2 | £69.99 |
| UK Flooring Direct | Cushion Acoustic Pro | > 20db | Pack: 15m2 | £58.32 |
| Acoustalay | 3mm Economy Fire Retardant Foam | > 19db | Pack: 18.75m2 | £29.09 |
Carpets vs Laminate Flooring in the Bedroom
The main downside to having laminate floors in your bedroom versus a carpet is the warmth underfoot. In winter and colder periods of the year, laminate or wooden floors can get quite cold underfoot which can be chilly first thing in the morning. This can be helped by purchasing an area rug or runner to place next to your bed and placing it near where you get out of bed in the morning next to your slippers. You could also look at laminate underfloor heating. The other downside is noise. Sound can carry through laminate and wooden flooring much more if not properly installed with the correct underlay
