Laminate Flooring for the Kitchen
One of the most popular searches on our site is people searching for kitchen related laminate flooring. The kitchen is a heavy footfall environment with lots of traffic, spillages, heat and potential for damage. So for a tough environment you'll need a suitably tough floor - usually AC3 or AC4 grading. Most of the products on this site are suitable for use in the kitchen and although we haven't yet graded B&Q's AC rating it's a safe bet that they are suitable for kitchen use unless otherwise stated.
Common Questions about the Kitchen & Laminate Flooring*
We will try and answer the most popular questions people ask us below. If you have a question or would like us to research/solve a problem please email us and we'll try and publish a response to your flooring question.
What about spillages?
Spillages are inevitable in any kitchen so to best protect your floor it's recommended that you buy a good quality DPM underlay and make sure you use a quality sealant/adhesive when fitting the floor. It may seem like extra effort is required when glueing a floor, but without the sealant protection in the kitchen your floor could become damaged. 9/10 times spillages can be cleaned up with a bucket of warm water and mop, however keep the mop as rung & dry as possible whilst cleaning to ensure the minimum amount of water is put back on the surface. As mops can be quite unhygienic, if you would like to clean the area after you could use a laminate cleaning solution with a micro fibre mop to ensure the joints are kept clean and hygienic.
Waterproof, Water Resistant, Splash Proof, Moisture Resistant - What do they mean?
With laminate flooring popularity increasing, manufacturers have started to provide guarantees against splash damage to select ranges of their floors. Laminate Flooring by nature hates water - it's not originally designed to protect against water damage and if there is a significant flood or leak it's more likely that your floor may need to be replaced. Manufacturers are offering an extra rating called 'water resistance','moisture resistant' and 'splash proof'. These phrases basically mean spillages are ok a long as cleaned up immediately. In general if you use the correct sealants and adhesives, you can protect against spillages and water damage. However, if you choose not to glue, your laminate floor could be damaged from water seeping through the joints.
Do I need adhesive or sealants with a Kitchen laminate floor?
Anywhere you are installing laminate floors which could be subject to water, moisture or spillages then it is highly recommended that you use an adhesive or sealant on your laminate plank joins. Downstairs, the majority of your laminate will be placed on top of a solid subfloor usually concrete, which can potentially mean moisture may come from the subfloor and affect your laminate. Always use a DPM (damp proof membrane) or what's known as a moisture or vapour barrier between a concrete floor and a laminate floor, and combining a DPM with a quality adhesive/sealant on the surface will help give you the best protection against water damage so YES is the answer.
Brand new kitchen floors - do I fit units of floor first?
As with any kitchen there are more than likely going to be fixed heavy kitchen units. These units are rarely moved (if ever) so would create a lot of downward pressure on the floor beneath over time if placed on the surface of the floor. Whilst you may be tempted (it's a lot easier) to fit a laminate floor into an empty room then place units on top of the floor, there are several reasons why you shouldn't do this. The general consensus is to install units first then fit your laminate floor around the units. Why?
- Removing the floor means removing the units, so replacing or repairing would be time consuming
- Plumbing/leak damaging the floor would mean removing the entire floor (units first)
- Weight of the units would restrict expansion of the floor
- Weight of the units may affect the level of the floor around the units
- Scratches and damage to the surface of the floor from units
