Laminate Kits - Fitting, Maintenance and Cleaning

There are several different varieties of kits on the market today, usually in the form of installation kits, cleaning kits and maintenance kits. Most good DIY stores stock their own brands of laminate fitting kits for around £10 which can usually be used for laminate or solid wood flooring. The cleaning kits are often sold with brand names (such as Quick-Step) and are required to be used to uphold a customers warranty on the laminate product. Maintenance kits usually contain products which are colour matched to your laminate shade in order to repair dents/scratches and also seal/reseal around pipes and obstacles such as sinks or toilets in the bathroom. Finally, cleaning kits are chemically compatible products to be used for your specific laminate flooring product. You aren't supposed to use water to clean a laminate floor, instead you should use a specially formulated laminate cleaner and apply with micro fibre cloths.

Fitting Kits - These packs are readily available and fairly inexpensive from DIY shops. The kit usually contains spacers, knocking block and a pull bar. Spacers are used to provide a uniform expansion gap between the floor and wall which is a requirement when installing to protect against the floor buckling against the wall due to expansion. A knocking block is a chunky piece of wood which is placed next to a loose plank end and tapped with a hammer. The idea of using a knocking block is to 'knock' the planks closer together providing a strong, sealed join. Finally, a pull bar is used when you cannot use a knocking block such as against a wall. You hook one end onto the plank and the other end rises up from the floor meaning you can hammer and 'pull' the plank towards the others instead of potentially damaging the wall.

Cleaning Kits - Usually contains a cleaning compound for removing stains and improving hygiene. Using water / mops isn't recommended for laminate however you can purchase micro fibre mop heads to simulate this and provide good cleaning for your floor. Vacuuming a laminate floor may sound like a good idea however can often lead to scratches on the surface hence another reason to use the correct cleaning products. As there may be children playing on the floor it's very important to keep the floor hygienic and clean in the grooves too, so wipes are an easy way to clean up spills and smaller areas.

Repair or Maintenance Kits - This kit is available for maintaining your laminate floor once installed. As there are many different shades of laminate flooring, customers purchasing these kits are usually have to mix a variety of base colours in order to match their desired shade. Usually in repair kits there are colour mixing pastes, several types of tints, mixing products (such as mixer/spatula) and a smoothing pad. It can be used to repair dints, scratches, indentations and various types of laminate flooring damage. If a plank is severely damaged however it's usually recommended to replace the plank and install a new one in it's place.
