Laminate Flooring Spacers - For Installing New Floors
Spacers for installing a laminate, engineered or solid wood floor
Spacers are sold by most DIY stores and flooring shops and are usually red or blue in colour. The function of a spacer is to provide a gap around the perimeter of your floor usually between 8-15mm called an expansion gap. If you install your laminate floor right up the wall several problems can occur. When the temperature in the room rises (or humidity) then the laminate product can expand to a greater size than when installed. If you run the floor right up to the sides of a room, when the floor expands it will have nowhere to go and either bow or buckle which eventually leads to rises and the floor coming up in spots around your room. The last thing you want when installing a laminate floor is to run right up to the edge so by placing a spacer between the wall or skirting board and the floor, you make sure there is sufficient 'expansion room' should the floors expand so the product won't be damaged. Each laminate flooring product usually has a set of installation instructions provided and will give you a recommended expansion gap width.
