Underfloor Heating - Systems for use with laminate flooring

- - -

Underfloor heating is becoming an increasingly popular addition to laminate flooring in homes across the UK. Laminate floors have a tendency to get cold underfoot and particularly in winter first thing in the morning it can get very chilly underfoot without underfloor heating. With most DIY stores selling their own branded versions of underfloor heating and many popular brands out there deciding which underfloor kit to buy through research could seem a bit daunting - plus there's always the option of installing it yourself.

What Types of Underfloor Heating are there?

Electric Underfloor Heating - This is the most popular type of underfloor heating which can easily be retro fitted under existing or new laminate floors. It comes in individual items or alternatively as kits and costs anywhere around the 100/M2 to purchase and install.

Water Underfloor Heating (a.k.a Hydronic) - Radiates heat evenly across the whole floor like a large radiator and can be up to 20% lower running costs than the traditional radiator setup. Installing underfloor heating means fitting a series of pipes underneath or inside (in screed) the subfloor beneath. Once you have the pipes connected you connect the system to a continuous feed of warm water using valves and controls. The water is always usually always warm as heating it up from scratch could mean a delay of up to two hours.

Electric vs Water Underfloor Heating

Retro Fitting - Electric underfloor heating is much easier to install as it is significantly thinner at around 3mm meaning you don't have to lower your floor or modify the level. Building a new home is the best time to utilise water based underfloor heating systems or if you are installing a brand new sub floor/adjusting the structure of the subfloor.

Cost - Water Underfloor Heating requires specialist installation so could in theory run into the thousands. Once installed correctly and connected to a warm water supply, this form of heating can be lower costs in the long term. Electric underfloor heating can be purchased and installed quickly, and is almost instant heat to your floor meaning less time to warm up. It can sometimes be more expensive to use as it's electric compared to a central heating/water based system.
