Wickes offer a fairly limited but quality range of underlays for your DIY laminate flooring projects. The main choice when selecting the correct underlay is what is the subfloor underneath where you are installing your laminate. Usually this differs from upstairs and downstairs.

When you install a laminate floor downstairs you are usually installing onto a concrete or 'solid' subfloor which means moisture may come up from the concrete subfloor and into the floating floor (your new laminate). For this reason it's important to protect against moisture and dampness by ensuring you have the correct type of underlay, namely a DAMP PROOF MEMBRANE (or DPM). If you are looking for a damp proofing solution, Wickes' High Performance Underlay features a moisture barrier to prevent damp spreading to your laminate. If you are looking for an underlay for a solid subfloor at Wickes, this is the one we'd recommend. If the floor is a little uneven with some dents/holes then we'd also recommend supplementing your underlay with Wickes' green fibreboard.

Alternatively if you are installing upstairs such as over floorboards, you can usually proceed without the DPM and opt for Wickes' fibreboard and or standard underlay roll. Upstairs also has the problem of creating more noise for downstairs guests, so if you are worried about noise generation (particularly in a shared property) make sure you check the Noise Reduction (DB) properties of each floor.
